Lila Turjanski-Villard

Lila Turjanski-Villard was born in Argentina where she studied sculpture in clay for more than ten years and her work was exhibited at different venues. Her classes in contemporary sculpture at the Westchester Art Workshop at Westchester Community College, motivated her exploration of new mediums, including plaster and glass. In 2005, she started to experiment with sculpture in paper to continue her journey with space, shape and movement inspired by the human figure.

Artist Statement

Since the very first day I started making sculpture I have always been fascinated by the human figure and its suggestions. My creative process starts with the manipulation of the materials, then a visualization of shape and space conducts me to my idea.

Some years ago, I began to develop a great interest in the stylization of the human figure which gets realized in the use of paper-mixed media. The paper adds texture contrasting with the stylization of the figures. Therefore, there is an interaction among space, shape and texture to generate the final sculpture. The viewer provides its final interpretation.

I live in Yorktown Heights, NY with my husband and our two young children with whom I share this passion and from whom I get inspiration.
