Artist’s Statement
My art represents the marriage of my two great loves: photography and fiber. Such an odd union – current digital technology and ancient textile techniques. Here I make peace with my early training and career as an advertising art director and the fiber art that has always provided an escape from the stress of a chaotic business world.
Many years ago I left the art world to pursue another career, but the creative spirit remained deep inside. This restless spirit is liberated when I use graphic design software to digitally manipulate my photographs. And it comes full circle when I print the images on fabric to create a relief effect with centuries-old textile techniques. The result is a photographic image with greatly enhanced depth and an invitation. I invite you, the viewer, to become part of the scenario; to become part of my world. Welcome.
The Background
Raised as an “army brat,” Gaskins has lived and traveled all over the world. As such, she defines her home as the state of . . . transition. She holds a BFA in graphic design and spent ten years as an art director before returning to school to earn an MBA a the University of Richmond. After twenty-five years in the corporate world — including twenty years of battling Atlanta traffic — she burned out and headed to a peaceful Florida island to rediscover herself. Her art resurfaced with a passion and has become a driving force that is still evolving.
The Art
Like the artist, the art doesn’t fit into a neatly defined category. Gaskins’ objective is to produce a strongly dimensional photo-realistic image, and she really doesn’t care if it is seen as photography, or mixed media, or fiber art. It’s art – art that doesn’t shout a statement. She wants her work to serve as a catalyst to launch viewers on their own personal mental journey where each person comes away with a different message.
The Awards
Gaskins’ work has won numerous awards since 2006 when she began this phase of her life.
She has also been published in 500 Art Quilts and exhibited in two of fiber art’s most prestigious shows – Fiberart International and Quilt National.
