James Seaman
James Seaman
Inspiration has come and my mind is focused. I have selected the materials. The tools are working and everything is in place. With dust, noise, sweat and a little blood, progress is made. Despite the grueling work it comes easy. After days of effort the piece will take shape. In the end, I step back and take it in. The piece is complete and it is good. With the unmistakable aesthetic experience - aha! I am an artist and I love art. I am gifted and I thank God for that.
Biography
James "Jay" Seaman specializes in sculptures made of metal and wood. He experiments with a variety of wood finishes and metal coloring techniques. Seaman possesses a Bachelor's degree in psychology, but as an artist is largely self-taught, relying on experimentation and his consultation with other fine artists and craftspeople to constantly hone his techniques and perfect his methods.
Seaman is incessantly trying to push the envelope, working his media to their structural limits as he creates his forms. He strives to elongate and stretch these forms to the point of impossibility without sacrificing strength or essential qualities. Though Seaman often sculpts whimsical people or, more famously, birds, he is open to any challenge and has recently worked on such varied subjects as a 5 foot, stainless steel lizard which is situated outside the beautiful Gateway Commons in downtown Ithaca, New York.
Seaman's technical knowledge must come in some part from his twenty plus years of experience in the trades. Besides creating sculptures, he works as a fine artisan for various commercial and residential building projects.
Seaman's work as a builder has also received high praise. His notable works include an elaborately carved mahogeny mantel at Cornell's recently restored Sage Hall which was featured in Fine Woodworking Magazine. The Audubon House in Key West, Florida has also acquired one of his sculptures. Most recently, Seaman was featured in the publication Life In The Finger Lakes.
Seaman feels strongly that he is lucky to have had the opportunities that have enabled him to become an artist.
He would love the chance to take on new challenges and build one of his custom sculptures for you or your organization. This artist loves to push the limits.
Jay Seaman lives with his wife, Kelly, and their daughter, Leah, in Trumansburg, about 10 miles north of Ithaca, in the beautiful Finger Lakes region of upstate New York. He has long been interested in craftsmanship and fine arts and has lived in Trumansburg most of his life. He continues to work as an artist from his studio and workshop when he's not taking on local building projects.
