In my studio I work with pastels on a variety of substrates, drawing simple places and experiences of light and weather. I am interested in the energy of air and the weight of the land, paying particular attention to the place where they meet. My intention is to create pages of a universal geography.
Using traditional bookbinding materials, metal, hardware, and glass, I also construct book and box forms that incorporate my original pastel drawings, real & invented ephemera, poetry, and digital images.
My intention is to combine visual representation and lyric memoir within the structural language of book and paper. With these book objects, boxes, and sculptural forms, I feel I am spanning centuries in a search for the integration of content, craftsmanship, and beauty. With digital technology in my studio alongside old hand tools, I am able to include my own writing in the work, exploring ideas of migration and the land, loss and redemption.
The continuum from old to new, past to present, is long and full of wonders.
